As someone who’s been laid off right before the holidays, I know firsthand how challenging that can be.
For people managers, advocating for your team is part of the job—even when tough decisions need to be made. If someone isn’t a good fit, you still have a moral responsibility to ensure they aren’t set up for failure. Timing matters.
Layoffs in November or December effectively remove people from the job market until the new year. Most companies slow down hiring during the holidays, leaving individuals scrambling through one of the hardest seasons to be unemployed.
Decisions like these aren’t always in our control, but how we approach them is. Treating team members with ethics, honesty, and empathy will resonate far beyond the role you manage.
If you’re a people manager:
✅ Be proactive in your advocacy.
✅ Help struggling team members improve before it’s too late.
✅ When change is unavoidable, consider the timing and impact on their future.
How you manage people reflects who you are as a leader.
