Hey lunch buddies.  What a great weekend.  My wife and I took the kids to the Minnesota Zoo Saturday.  It was only 60ish degrees and mostly cloudy so it was a perfect day to go check out all the animals without roasting.  I would have to say the “farm” continues to be my favorite part.  Can’t go wrong with a bunch of pigs, cows and goats!

I do owe each of you an apology. I said last week that you could look forward to a new blog post.  It’s in process but is slow to get completed. Gary Illyes at announced at the Pubcon conference last week that Google will be switching to a mobile first index.
Nick’s take:
The World Wide Web continues to lean heavier and heavier on a mobile first user experience.  With that said it doesn’t surprise me one bit that Google is making this change.  My first reaction was that if your site isn’t mobile friendly it should be your top priority.  No dates have been announced when this will happen or if they anticipate it to cause any issues with rankings.  Stay Tuned.

SEO Tips & Advice

Google published recently a post on Google plus about Removing the Ability to Demote Organic Site Links.  Historically you could tell Google to stop promoting a page in your organic sitelinks within Webmaster tools (search console).  Google will not be supporting this request anymore.

I’ve requested Google ‘demote’ sitelinks many times in my career.  I’m not sure what the real point of removing this feature is but I’m not a big fan.  The solution they suggest is to avoid a page being listed as a potential sitelink is to no-index the page.  There are a lot of instances where a page might be valuable but not a good fit as a sitelink.   We’ll have to continue to watch this as Google continues to add and remove our ability to control the SERPs.
