Hey lunch buddies.  I hope everyone is having a great start to their week.  Last week was full of catching up after a few days in Boston.  I was fortunate enough to have limited meetings which made catching up relatively easy.  This week looks like a great opportunity for getting ahead on deliverables.

On a personal front, the weekend was good (minus the Vikings losing AGAIN).  I was able to catchup on some housework and get some much needed car maintenance done prior to our nasty Minnesota winters.

What’s important?
Google has made it well known that they intend to display their search results with a mobile first index priority.  While Google says this shouldn’t cause any major shakeups in rankings – it should make those with questionable mobile sites a bit nervous.

Nick’s take:
My personal opinion is that this mobile first index will only cause issues for sites that have very low quality mobile sites.  Additionally, if you currently serve your mobile site with only a portion of the content that your desktop site shows then you too may run into issues.

If you’re in a scenario where your mobile site isn’t up to snuff, then it should be high on your priority list.  If I’m someone who is running a m. site vs a responsive design I’m also looking to make changes sooner than later.   It will be very interesting to see what reports come out as this change rolls out.

SEO Tips & Advice

Tony Edward talks about avoiding outbound link penalties.  He goes over an example where his client received a penalty due to questionable outbound links from their sites.

One thing Google has done over the years is make it so the average joe is horrified to link from their website.  This is extremely unfortunate as linking is extremely natural – this fear just makes link building even more difficult.

There are a few links you should be concerned about and is very well worth discussing quality assurance processes with your team to make sure you avoid having these on your site(s).

  • are you linking to a site that is completely irrelevant to your site? IE: a link to a personal loan site from your cooking blog.
  • are you selling advertising or links on your site without using the ‘no-follow’ attribute?
  • the use of affiliate links that are not ‘no-followed’ or blocked by search engines.
  • do you allow people outside of your staff to contribute content (user generated content) to your site?

The above are just a few situations that could cause links to be added to your site that could cause issues.  Just like the content on your site, the links being added should be manually reviewed.

An outbound link penalty is completely avoidable. Train your staff and take the extra time to review the links on your site.  If you have any questions as to the risk of a certain link on a site – feel free to hit “reply” to this email and I’m happy to take a quick look and give you my feedback.
