Hi Lunch Buddies!

Did you all enjoy your weekend? It was a bit cooler here in Minnesota which made it great for completing all the outdoor chores I’ve been putting off.

Article: Announcing the new Bing Webmaster Tools (migration complete)

What’s Important:
Bing’s team has been ramping up its webmaster tools suite since early February. Last week, Bing announced the migration is complete. Not only did they enhance 5 existing tools but we now have 3 net new tools.

Nick’s Take:
I love tools. Especially when it allows me to get even more access to data for my client’s websites. Admittedly, Bing webmaster tools was always a “nice to have” tool but never a requirement. I’m slowly starting to change my mind. What do you all think of the updated Bing Webmaster Tools?

How Link-Begging Became the Most Annoying Search Engine Tactic
Written by Ernie Smith, Vice
Uh-oh, another mainstream article talking about link building. Normally I ignore these types of posts. However, Ernie does a really good job of summing up why it is that we all receive so many emails begging for links. Summed up, why beg for links? Because it works – when done correctly.

The impact of GPT-3 on Google Search, a complex-adaptive system
Written by Kevin Indig, kevin-indig.com
Last week I included a link about GPT-3 and then linked out to the wrong article. So sorry about that. To (hopefully) make up for that, I bring you another great article about GPT-3. This time it talks about the storm that people THINK GPT-3 will cause (even more unemployment?) and why Kevin isn’t too concerned.

What is HTTPS: The Definitive Guide to How HTTPS Works

This article pairs exceptionally well with a series of tweets that Patrick Stox sent out just the other day. You don’t have to be a developer to understand the importance of HTTPS. I highly encourage everyone who’s in involved in SEO to read this article.

Google’s Top Search Result – Shocking, It’s Google!
Written by Adrianne Jeffries and Leon Yin, The Mark Up
As I clicked this link I secretly hoped that “Google” wouldn’t be the answer. Though, to nobody’s surprise, I was right. Adiranna and Leon pulled some really interesting data from back in the 2000’s to present day SERPs. The increase in Google results are stagarring.

How Googlebot Almost Killed A Website W/ Extreme Crawling
Written by Serge Bezborodov, Jet Octopus
I had a situation VERY similar to this just last month. Like Serge, I too had someone come to me saying that their host was threatening to cut their service or charge an extreme fee for the number of resources their site was consuming. Good issue, right? No. This website was only getting a few thousand visits per day. Google was absolutely crushing this site I have other clients with millions of visits not using this level of crawling. Check out this article if to find out their solution. Below is the screenshot of before/after for my situation.
