With all of that said, I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Mine was fairly laid back hanging out with the kids and getting some projects done around the house. The kids go back to school next week so we’re collectively trying to soak up the sun and use every excuse in the book to grab some ice cream.

Article: Google is aware of sites hosted on another’s subdomain

What’s Important:
Google rep John Mueller discussed hosting sites/content on other websites subdomain in one of his most recent Google Webmaster Hangout sessions. While not against Google’s terms of services, the larger Google quality team is looking for ways to appropriately understand this type of implementation and how it should be handled in their larger ranking algorithm. 

Nick’s Take:
Welcome to one of the biggest “cheat codes” available to folks with money. Starting up a new company? Want to get a head start in your organic search visibility? Buy or rent a subdomain off an existing domain that is heavily valued in the eyes of Google’s search engines. Don’t be surprised if you see these types of subdomains impacted in future core algorithm updates.

I love SEO migrations. I’ve had a lot of success with them in the past and when done correctly it really can be a thing of beauty. What I don’t enjoy is the mapping of 301 redirects out for hundreds, thousands or even millions of URLs. Sammy’s post explains a similar approach to dealing with URLs for migrations. He even includes several excel/google sheet formulas which will save you considerable time.

Admittedly, local SEO is not a strength of mine so when I run across articles about local I tend to just gloss over them. However, this case study post kept my full attention. While it doesn’t completely shock me, Adam and his team show correlation (causation?) in which a higher local ranking can result in a higher organic ranking as well.  What do you guys think?

Sam walks us through a GDS report that hooks directly into Google’s page speed insights engine as well as the Chrome user experience report. If you’re struggling to actively track your site speed then Sam’s report is a great starting point.
