Wow. This month has been super crazy. The niche website i’ve been sharing publicly (bestcanistervacuums.net) has been on a wild roller coaster. Let me sum it up by posting first a snapshot of the traffic in the month of August.
That’s one heck of a drop right? I’m not 100% certain what happened but fortunately it looks like i’m starting to see a rebound in traffic. Unfortunately it’s still at a fraction of what it was at the beginning of August.
So what happened? I’m still not 100% sure. I wrote about the inherent risks oflink networks previously where one I participated in got zapped. I’m happy that I really only used 1 or 2 links to an internal page on this website. This internal page did account for about 50% of the traffic so its very possible that the link network getting canned contributed to my drop. I think what really effected the site was an unofficial Google update that has been talked about but won’t be confirmed/denied by Google. Interestingly enough – more chatter about an additional algorithm update around September 4th occurred. While many saw drops, I started to see a resurgence in the sites rankings. For a couple weeks I had dropped off the first page completely where I had been ranking top 3 originally. This second update has me floating around the middle of the first page for many of these keywords I had previously been ranking for.
The plan moving forward will be to add a few more links to the website. I have been pretty sensitive with the anchor text and built mostly URL links. I might up the partial exact match anchor text to include variations of my keywords such as “find canister vacuums here” or “best canister vacuum reviews” etc. I think this strategy will help increase the rankings for this site.
Down Month, Down Earnings?
So with the huge drop of traffic you would assume my earnings plummeted too. Right? Well Yes and No. In the beginning of the month I was absolutely killing it. $20-$50 a day in commission was becoming the new normal. Then when the traffic died so did the commission. Fortunately, with the beginning of the month so strong I was able to still bring in $485.40. That’s $73.57 more than the previous month.
Tools I Use For Selecting and Building My Niche Sites
Since starting this public niche site experiment I have had a few people ask me what I use to determine my niches, keywords, and how I build my sites. Below are a few tools that I rely on to help build sites. These links are affiliate links so if you purchase through one thanks in advance. I would recommend these tools regardless of the affiliate offering so if you want to feel free to Google search the product name and it will avoid giving me a small referral bonus. Don’t worry – it’s all good – It’s completely up to you but still check out these tools and services!
I use HostGator for my web hosting. They also own SEOHosting which will allow you to utilize multiple IP addresses if your interested in scaling your niche website creation or even building links through expired domains. Use promo code “25OFFNICHEHOSTING” to save 25%
If you want to build a website very similar to my website bestcanistervacuums.net you’ll need to get the wordpress plugin WPZonBuilder. This plugin allows you to very easily build product pages that encourage your visitors to click over to Amazon using your affiliate link.
Plans for September
As some of you have read in the e-mails i’ve sent out for new posts, my wife and I are expecting twin girls very soon – very likely in September. So my goal is to do a lot of work with this site within the next week so that it can run on ‘auto-pilot’ until for at least a few weeks. To do just this I have found myself a write on oDesk to write more articles for this site. I’ve also picked up a few expired domains that I plan setting up so that I can add an few more valuable links to the website. I’m hoping that these few links in addition to the solid content will help pick this website out of a rut. If not – i’ll be delivering a very unexciting income report next month. I definitely don’t want that to happen.
Hey! What About That Insurance Site?
Let me first apologize for the lack of updates on this website. I knew it would be a slow start but really I haven’t been giving the website as much attention as I would like to have. As mentioned in the previous post, bostonautoinsurance.net is live and I recently added a few blog posts to the website. I haven’t made a penny on the website just yet but don’t really anticipate it generating any revenue until I can get above the local listings on the first page of the SERPs.
I plan on posting soon a post strictly on the strategy and status of this website. The last time I ran a rank report I was bouncing between #80-#90 in the SERPs. While that’s not going to earn me a single penny – its good to see progress with the very minimal link building I have done. As I mentioned earlier, a post dedicated to this site will be live soon.
