Last night I received a nice little e-mail from SkimLinks informing me that they will now be enforcing Amazons decision to no longer work with affiliates in certain states. This of course was the entire reason I joined SkimLinks in the first place as I was kicked out of the Amazon Associates program due to living in the state of Minnesota. Below is a screen shot of the full e-mail I received letting me know that I have until September 26th to stop using SkimLinks affiliation with Amazon.
While I’m trying really hard to not be upset with SkimLinks this does suck. I imagine they will get a fair amount of backlash even though it’s not there fault Amazon is being so dumb. I can only assume that SkimLinks makes a fair amount of their money off their association with Amazon and it definitely wouldn’t be in their financial benefit to strain that relationship for a small percentage of affiliates they have located in the banned states.
What’s The Plan For The Canister Vacuum Site?
Once again i’m in a tough spot. I’ve been thinking about it all last night and I believe I came up with two solutions.
Sell the website
Replace all the Amazon affiliate links one-by-one until they all go to a different merchant.
The reality is that if this website had not taken an organic nose dive last month I would be placing this bad boy on Flippa and cashing in. However, the instability of this website I believe would hurt the value significantly. So the only other plan is to replace all the links on the website so that they go to other merchants that SkimLinks has an affiliation with. This shouldn’t be too tough as they have affiliate programs with KMart, Target, Macy’s etc. Unfortunately, I think a chunk of revenue may be loss as Amazon is by far the largest ecommerce website and i’m sure a fair amount of sales that I was given credit for came from other purchases than vacuum cleaners.
The one thing that will suck is that i’ll have to remove the WPZonBuilder plugin from the website. This plugin as far as I know only creates product pages using Amazon. Since I can’t change the link destination of the purchase buttons these pages will have to go. Since the product descriptions are considered duplicate content I had made a decision a few months back to simply no-index the pages and hope that individuals landing on the homepage and various articles would consider viewing them. That’s exactly what has happened.
BestCanisterVacuums.net will still be alive. Between the instability in its current rankings and now SkimLinks being forced to kick me out of their amazon affiliate relationship i’ll have to change up the website. In fact i’ve already changed the links on the homepage. What will this do for conversion and income? I’m not sure. But you can rest assure that i’ll be sharing with you guys everything that i find out!!
